Paul Merson thinks Chelsea do not currently have but says patience is crucial under Frank Lampard.
After coming from Derby from the summertime, Lampard has picked up five points from four games from the Premier League, dropping leads in Stamford Bridge in both of the matches.
They drew 1-1 with Leicester on August 18 before casting off a 2-0 lead against Sheffield United on Saturday.
But using a transfer ban in place, Merson considers patience is critical, together with Chelsea fielding one of the youngest average ages within their starting XIs this season.
Chelsea were beaten 4-0 by Manchester United on the opening day of the season, but talking on The Debate, Merson believes game direction in both home draws has been worrying.
«I had been disappointed with them in the past 30 minutes against Man Utd, I thought they threw in the towel and then drifted off.
«But it’s a tough one; as a new supervisor you would like to appear and entertain. I am a Chelsea fan. If Mourinho had been 2-0 up against Sheffield United, he put on another defensive player and’d bring a striker off. That was the conclusion of the match, ending of, along with the team knew that also.
«The other groups do not know that today. Chelsea haven’t got that fear variable anymore. Now, teams such as Leicester can stay in the game against them, and towards the end it seemed like perhaps Leicester would win it.»
Merson considers Lampard would be overachieving when he managed to sneak Chelsea this season, and states some of his squad’s inexperience, including Tammy Abraham along with the remarkable Mason Mount, must permit him more time.
«I like Frank, and that I believe you obtain expertise as you proceed. Would somebody have played with Mason Mount? He’s a special player. And now Tammy Abraham has four goals.
«We only do this by studying, you do not get five games later on and say:’You are out of the team,’ if they are not doing. You go back to square one similar to that. Patience. These are kids that are young.
«Man City and Liverpool are so far ahead of everyone today, this is not the same circumstance. If Chelsea ended in the top four this season, Frank would get director of the year, in my opinion.»
Merson also enjoys that Lampard, as the Chelsea superstar and inexperienced director, may feel inclined if his side are currently top to entertain the crowd. His advice to Lampard is to’Do a Mourinho!» And take the points.
«Winning games is a tough thing to do when you have lost your very best player, and among the best players on the planet in Hazard. Frank is it up. I think he will gain patience, however in the present time, I believe you do need to entertain. Do a Mourinho!
«You occasionally think in a project:’Oh, so I have to keep fun here, otherwise that the fans are going to find the hump!’ In the end, you don’t have to do that, you want to be clued up, take the 3 things.»
